Everyone needs to be able to make other people laugh and have a good time. If Houstonians don’t know what to do for a special event like a birthday, date night, or wedding anniversary, they might want to check out a comedy club to see a show. The same could be said about improv workshops if you think you have what it takes to make people laugh with clever jokes. We have put together a list of the best comedy shows in Houston, where you can see nationally and internationally famous stand-up comedians perform and take improv workshops to get better at being funny yourself.
The Laff Stop in Houston used to be a well-known place to see stand-up comedy. Even though there are no longer four stand-alone comedy clubs in the city, there are still plenty of other places to have fun. Here are some that we like.
Speakeasy Comedy Lounge
The Speakeasy Comedy Lounge is in the middle of Houston and tries to make people feel as comfortable as they would in a friend’s living room. Every Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., the club has great stand-up comedy shows that improve the atmosphere.
Each concert can only have up to 40 people, and each ticket costs $20 USD. The best local and national comedians perform, and the club makes sure its customers have a great night out with a full meal menu and nothing but laughs.
The Secret Group
The Secret Group is a comedy club that sometimes has concerts and changes into a dance club. It is in the East Downtown area of Houston, which is growing quickly. The Secret Group puts on a lot of different shows every week, from comedy to open mic nights, but only a few of them consistently draw big crowds. The “$2 Bill – Two Dollar Comedy Act” has a rotating lineup of comedians, a cheap cover charge (obviously), $2 Tecate cans, free chips and salsa from El Real, and karaoke after the show. Another hit is the “8th Wonder Comedy Hour,” which is put on by 8th Wonder Brewery. The cost to get in is only $5, but for an extra $8, you can also get a free pint glass and beer.
Station Theater
At 1230 Houston Avenue, this place gives up-and-coming comedians a place to perform and a place to learn. At Station Theater, classes, workshops, and labs are all about making improv and sketches with the goal of putting them on stage.
Houston Improv Comedy Club
When it comes to booking, the best comedy acts go to the city’s biggest venues, like the Smart Financial Centre and the Revention Music Center. But The Improv is by far the most popular choice when it comes to comedy clubs. The Improv is a great place for comedy shows in Houston because it often hosts nationally known comedians who are on tour.
Notsuoh
Some of the best open mic nights in town happen at Rudyard’s Pub on Mondays (entry is free and the food is always great) and at Darwin’s Pub on Wednesdays (where the owner of the bar is also a stand-up comic). Also, don’t forget to see Avant Garden. This weird bar in Montrose always has a food truck parked in the parking lot, and the drinks are dirt cheap.
The Riot
The Riot Comedy Show has been entertaining people for 30 years, and some of the most popular comedians in Texas have been on it. This bar turns into a comedy club on Thursdays through Sundays, when stand-up comedians do their acts for the crowd. There are many different kinds of humor here, from modern stand-up to dark humor.
There’s no doubt that these comedians have what it takes to make people laugh out loud. Every day there is a different comedian and act, so guests can be sure they will always see something new and have a great time they won’t forget.
