How does Facebook Work?

Facebook is powered by an algorithm that can learn the preferences and interests of each user. The algorithm then displays user-relevant content such as images, status updates, and videos posted by friends and businesses. Facebook’s objective is to encourage users to engage with, consume, and share content.

In addition, Facebook runs advertisements for businesses, which are interspersed with the content shared by your friends on the news feed. The advertisements are tailored to your interests, so you see what the algorithm believes you may be interested in based on the content you have previously interacted with. This method is known as behavioural targeting.

How the Facebook Algorithm Works

Facebook previously utilised a chronological timeline. This indicates that your newsfeed displays posts in the order in which they were shared by your friends on the platform most recently. If your mother posted three hours ago and your best friend posted five minutes ago, you would first see your best friend’s post. Facebook announced in September 2011 that it was discontinuing the chronological newsfeed and replacing it with a more personalised experience, and everything changed. You no longer see your friends’ posts in the order in which they were shared, but rather the content that Facebook’s algorithm believes you’ll enjoy the most. This newsfeed continues to exist today.

Your information will be housed on your Facebook profile. Your profile can include your name, photo, hometown, workplace, education history, and so on. You can make your profile as public or private as you desire by disabling the information you do not wish to be visible to the public. This is where all of your friends’ posts will be displayed. Additionally, you will see updates from business pages you’ve liked. Additionally, your posts will appear in the newsfeed, where your friends can view them.

The timeline is a record of all the posts you’ve shared and all the posts you’ve interacted with. If a friend tags you in a post or photo, it will appear on your timeline, despite the fact that you won’t normally see their status updates here. By default, your friends can view your timeline if they search for your name, unless you have adjusted your privacy settings to the contrary.

The terms are frequently used interchangeably, but Facebook uses the term “post” to refer to something you share on the newsfeed. Text, images, videos, and your location are just some of the types of posts you can publish to your friends’ newsfeeds.
